KAMPALA, Uganda – In a significant step forward for the nation’s mining sector, the Uganda Association of Artisanal and Small Scale Miners (UGAASM) has announced a landmark achievement: the issuance of three new small-scale mining licenses.

The licenses were granted to mining groups Budimix, MUMA, and West Peak. UGAASM hailed this development as “a moment of pride for Uganda’s artisanal mining community,” marking a critical milestone in the journey toward a more formalized and responsible mining industry.

Founded in 2018, UGAASM has been at the forefront of efforts to organize and support artisanal miners across the country. The association unites 158 distinct Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) groups, aiding them in the process of formalization and navigating the regulatory landscape established by Uganda’s 2022 Mining Act.

This recent success underscores the tangible progress of these efforts. The formal licensing of these three groups not only empowers the miners themselves but also drives sustainable economic growth for the wider community and the country.
“Marking a milestone in empowering responsible and formalized mining across Uganda,” the association stated in a social media post, celebrating the achievement.
The move is expected to set a precedent, encouraging other artisanal miners to pursue formalization, which brings benefits such as legal protection, access to finance, and improved safety and environmental standards.
