In a landmark move for East African manufacturing, President Yoweri Museveni commissioned the Kiira Vehicle Plant on September 26, 2025, establishing what is being hailed as the largest and most advanced electric vehicle production facility in Africa.
The sprawling 65,000-square-meter plant in Jinja is operated by the state-owned Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC). It represents a significant milestone in Uganda’s long-term development strategy, Vision 2040, which aims to transform the nation into a modern industrial economy.
The facility boasts an annual production capacity of 2,500 electric and hybrid buses and cars. This venture is expected to create more than 1,000 direct jobs and position Uganda as a key player in regional e-mobility, with plans to export vehicles to neighboring countries.
The project, which broke ground in 2018, received over $100 million in government funding. Despite facing significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the plant’s completion marks a major achievement in Uganda’s ambitions to reduce carbon emissions and lead in sustainable transportation solutions.
As noted by officials on social media, the plant is a “bold step in shaping Uganda’s industrial & e-mobility” future, signaling the country’s commitment to green industrialization and technological advancement on the continent.
