Uganda Positions Itself to Tap into Multi-Trillion Dollar Global Halal Market
KAMPALA – In a significant push to boost national exports, Ugandan food and beverage producers are being urged to capitalize on newly accessible opportunities within the global halal market, currently estimated to be worth over $2 trillion.
The government is spearheading the initiative to expand the country’s export portfolio, with a particular focus on agricultural products such as beef. This strategic move targets the rapidly growing consumer demand for halal-certified products worldwide.
According to projections from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (MTIC), Uganda’s halal-certified beef exports to the Middle East alone have the potential to reach a staggering $1.09 billion (approximately UGX 4.1 trillion) by the year 2030.
The ambitious strategy extends beyond beef. Officials project that exports across the entire agricultural value chain could more than double, reaching an estimated $3.5 billion (roughly UGX 13.3 trillion) within the same timeframe. This represents a massive economic opportunity for Ugandan farmers, processors, and exporters.
The global halal market encompasses not just food and beverages but also pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and logistics, offering a wide array of opportunities for Ugandan businesses. The government’s call to action highlights a concerted effort to ensure local producers meet the required certification standards to access these lucrative international markets, particularly in the Middle East and other Muslim-majority regions.
This focus on halal certification is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Ugandan products, diversify its export destinations, and significantly contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
