Uganda Receives 60,000 Biometric Kits to Secure 2026 General Elections

ENTEBBE, Uganda – In a significant step towards bolstering electoral integrity, Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) has taken delivery of an initial batch of 60,000 Biometric Voter Verification Kits ahead of the January 2026 general elections.
The consignment, supplied by Sim Valley, arrived at Entebbe International Airport on Monday. EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi Simon oversaw the receipt of the kits, which are a cornerstone of the commission’s strategy to prevent electoral malpractices that have marred previous polls.
Justice Byabakama emphasized that the new technology will be used to verify voters’ identities through real-time fingerprint and national ID checks. This process is designed to effectively curb multiple voting and ballot stuffing, issues he acknowledged have “bedevilled previous elections.”
The newly acquired kits represent a technological upgrade, featuring enhancements such as offline functionality and ballot sorting capabilities. According to officials, the plan is to deploy at least two units at each polling station to ensure a smooth and verifiable voting process.
The EC expects to receive the remaining 40,000 kits by the end of November, bringing the total to 100,000 units as the nation prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle.
