Uganda Saves Shs8 Trillion in Landmark Rift Valley Railways Case
London, UK – August 4, 2025 — Uganda has secured a major legal victory in London, saving the country a staggering Shs8 trillion in a high-stakes arbitration case involving Rift Valley Railways (RVR). In a ruling delivered by an international arbitration panel, Uganda was found to have fully complied with its obligations under the concession and interface agreements related to the regional railway concession.
The panel dismissed RVR’s claims against the Ugandan government and ruled on the merits in Uganda’s favour, citing that the country had acted within the confines of its contractual obligations throughout the disputed period.
In addition to avoiding the colossal financial claim, Uganda was also awarded costs amounting to Shs14 billion — a further vindication of its legal and procedural conduct during the arbitration process.
The case, which had drawn regional attention due to its implications for public-private partnerships in infrastructure, marks a significant triumph for Uganda’s legal and transport sectors.
Government officials hailed the ruling as a win for accountability and prudent contract management, underscoring Uganda’s commitment to defending its national interests in complex international disputes.
