KAMPALA – October 8, 2025 – Uganda is preparing to welcome foreign ministers from across the globe as it hosts the Mid-Term Review Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) from October 13 to 16 at the Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The high-level meeting, held under the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” comes after Uganda successfully chaired the 19th NAM Summit of Heads of State and Government in January 2024.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government is in “advanced stages of preparation” to host delegations from NAM member states, observer countries, and international organizations.
The conference aims to deliberate on a wide range of pressing global issues. Key items on the agenda include:
· Addressing Geopolitical Tensions: The meeting will assess the relevance of NAM amid rising global tensions and address threats to development, peace, and security.
· Focus on Palestine and Gaza: A significant part of the discussions will reaffirm the “centrality of the Palestine issue” to the movement. Ministers are expected to express deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, call for immediate relief, and demand the full implementation of a recent UN General Assembly resolution (ES-10/27) to end the blockade and open borders for aid.
· Reforming Global Governance: The agenda calls for strengthening multilateralism and reforming global institutions like the United Nations and international financial architecture to better reflect the needs of the Global South. This includes a specific call for greater African representation in a reformed UN Security Council, citing the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration.
· Poverty Eradication and Development: The conference will reaffirm poverty eradication as a core UN 2030 Agenda objective and stress the need for a revitalized global partnership to implement development commitments.
Other points for discussion include strengthening regional cooperation for industrial development and trade, and preparing for the upcoming 20th NAM Summit in Uzbekistan.
The Government has announced that there will be controlled access in and around the Munyonyo venue during the conference and has requested the public’s cooperation in adhering to traffic control measures to ensure the event’s success.
Final consultations on the Outcome Documents to be adopted by the foreign ministers are currently ongoing among member states.
The conference underscores Uganda’s continued leadership of the 120-member movement, with the agenda also including an appreciation for the leadership of President Yoweri Museveni.
