Kampala, Uganda – A storm has erupted within sections of Uganda’s Muslim community after popular singer Chosen Becky was reportedly taken to Mecca by her husband, Ssekajja, to perform Umrah despite her being widely known as a non-Muslim.
Several Muslim leaders, including Sheikh Salim Bossa, have strongly condemned the act, describing it as a direct insult to the Islamic faith. According to them, the holy pilgrimage is strictly reserved for believers, and escorting a non-Muslim to Mecca is considered both sacrilegious and unacceptable.
The clerics further questioned the faith of Ssekajja, warning that his actions undermine the sanctity of Umrah and cast doubt on his commitment to Islam.
“She is not a believer, and yet he carried her to the holiest place in our religion. This is unacceptable. It’s a mockery to the faith,” Sheikh Bossa reportedly stated during a press briefing.
The leaders have since demanded that Chosen Becky issue a public apology for what they called “an insult to Islam.” They also warned that failure to do so could prompt them to take further action, though details of the next steps remain unclear.
The development has sparked heated debate among the public, with some defending Becky’s right to travel with her husband while others insist that religious boundaries must be respected.
Neither Chosen Becky nor Ssekajja has issued an official statement in response to the growing controversy.
