ENTEBBE, Uganda – In a significant step towards modernizing its ground operations and embracing sustainable transport, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has taken delivery of two state-of-the-art electric buses.
The buses, manufactured locally by Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC), were officially handed over to the UCAA by the Hon. Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, in a ceremony held today.
This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for Uganda’s aviation sector, directly aligning with global environmental goals. The new fleet of electric coaches will bolster UCAA’s existing transportation services and is a tangible commitment to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) long-term ambition of achieving net-zero carbon emissions from aviation by 2050.
“The reception of these electric buses is not just about upgrading our fleet; it’s about steering the entire aviation sector towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future,” said a UCAA representative. “We are proud to be at the forefront of this transition in Uganda.”
The new e-coaches boast impressive specifications, underscoring Kiira Motors’ growing capability in electric vehicle technology. Each bus has a passenger capacity of 64 and an extensive range of approximately 500 kilometers on a single charge, making them highly efficient and reliable for the high-demand environment of airport transfers.
The handover, facilitated by Dr. Musenero, also highlights the success of government initiatives to promote domestic innovation and manufacturing in the technology and automotive sectors. Kiira Motors Corporation stands as a flagship example of Ugandan engineering prowess.
This move by UCAA is expected to reduce the authority’s carbon footprint significantly, decrease noise pollution on the apron, and set a new standard for eco-friendly operations within the region’s aviation industry.
