Uganda’s Hoima City Stadium Nears Completion for 2027 AFCON
HOIMA, Uganda – Uganda’s flagship sports infrastructure project, the 20,000-seater Hoima City Stadium, is rapidly approaching completion, with officials reporting the construction is now 92% complete. The stadium, a critical venue for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is on track for a handover by December 31, 2025.
Built by the Turkish construction firm SUMMA International with funding of $129 million from Uganda’s Petroleum Fund, the facility is more than just a football stadium. It is a multi-sports complex that includes training pitches, a 5,000-capacity indoor arena, and an Olympic-standard swimming pool.
The project has garnered high-level attention, with President Yoweri Museveni and State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang conducting recent site visits to commend the rapid progress. The stadium is set to be one of four main venues for the 2027 AFCON, which will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
The development has generated excitement locally, as reflected on social media. One user, DBwambale, shared an image of the interior with the comment, “SUMMA cooked and is still at it,” praising the contractor’s workmanship.
The timely completion of the Hoima City Stadium is a significant milestone for Uganda, representing a major upgrade in sports infrastructure and national preparedness for the prestigious continental tournament.
