HOIMA, Uganda – In a significant milestone for Ugandan sports, the new 20,000-seat Hoima City Stadium in western Uganda has been officially completed, well ahead of its December 2025 deadline.
The announcement was made by State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, via a post on the social media platform X. The stadium was constructed by the Turkish engineering firm Summa.
“This multi-sports facility is a key piece of infrastructure for the nation,” officials stated. In addition to the main stadium, the complex includes an indoor arena, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, training pitches, and modern LED floodlights that can be illuminated in Uganda’s national colors.
The stadium’s completion is a major step in Uganda’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
President Yoweri Museveni is scheduled to officially commission the facility during his planned visit to the Bunyoro region in December.
The project’s modern design and rapid construction have been met with widespread praise on Ugandan social media. However, some citizens have also raised concerns about the stadium’s accessibility from the capital, Kampala, and questions about its long-term maintenance to ensure it remains a world-class venue.
