KISORO – Tragedy struck Kisoro District on Sunday night when a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier allegedly took his own life shortly after watching the English Premier League clash between Manchester United and Arsenal.
The deceased, identified as RA 267544 Pte. Samuel Kwesiga, 32, was attached to the 35th Battalion. According to preliminary reports, Kwesiga had gone to Nyanamo Trading Centre to watch the much-anticipated Premier League match.
Witnesses say that at around 9:00 p.m., the soldier returned to his detach and told his colleagues that he was tired before proceeding to his unipot, which he locked from inside.
Moments later, gunshots were heard from his quarters. Fellow soldiers initially suspected an accidental discharge, but when attempts to reach him failed, they peeped through the window and saw him lying in a pool of blood.
The door was forced open, only for his colleagues to discover Kwesiga lifeless, with a gunshot wound believed to be self-inflicted.
Security officials have since launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and what may have driven the soldier to end his life.
