US Embassy Probes Death of American Citizen in Entebbe Police Cells
KAMPALA – Officials from the United States Embassy in Kampala have reportedly launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of an American national, identified as Eric Nkusi, who died while in police custody in Entebbe.
Nkusi, who also had roots in Burundi, was arrested last Friday after immigration authorities found he had overstayed his visa, having lived in Uganda for several weeks beyond the permitted period. He was subsequently detained at Entebbe police cells pending deportation.
According to police sources, Nkusi allegedly struggled with drug addiction and began shivering while in detention. He is said to have requested heroin—an illegal drug to which he was reportedly addicted—but officers dismissed his pleas, telling him he would have to wait until he returned to his home country.
Authorities say the incident is now under review, with both Ugandan police and US embassy officials seeking to establish the exact cause of Nkusi’s death.
