WAKISO – In a notable declaration of party discipline, singer-turned-politician Mathias Walukagga has publicly pledged that he will not run as an independent candidate in the upcoming Busiro East parliamentary race if he fails to secure the party’s nomination.
Walukagga, who is seeking his party’s flag, stated that his commitment to the institution’s regulations outweighs his personal political ambitions. He explained, “I am not ready to violate, overlook, and undermine my political party’s norms, laws, and rules that govern us.”
The announcement positions Walukagga as a party loyalist and sets the stage for a competitive primary. He is leveraging his record as a former mayor, describing himself as a “workaholic” during his tenure. He has presented himself as the right candidate to address the long-term neglect of Busiro East residents, promising focused representation.
His pledge, however, does not clear the field. The incumbent Member of Parliament, Counsel Lubega Segona, is determined to retain his seat. Segona has reportedly gone to great lengths to affirm his party membership, including driving to Magere to personally plead his case before the party president. He has sought to reassure leadership of his allegiance despite not being a regular presence at the party headquarters in Kavule.
Adding to the contest is Tycoon Magoola, another hopeful who is banking on his financial contributions to the party, notably his role in funding the construction of the party headquarters, to win favor and the nomination.
The Busiro East race is shaping up to be a microcosm of wider political dynamics, testing the influence of incumbency, financial backing, and grassroots service records within the party’s selection process.
