Who is Abraham Luzzi, the Outlandish Candidate Shaking Up the Kampala MP Race
Abraham Luzzi has emerged as a major and unorthodox contender in the Kampala Central Member of Parliament race, capturing public attention with a deeply controversial campaigning style that openly insults the electorate.
Defying conventional political wisdom, Luzzi’s approach features him bluntly calling voters “ignorant and poor,” a strategy that appears to be resonating with a segment of the electorate drawn to his straightforward, no-nonsense delivery.
His bombastic rhetoric is matched by campaign promises that are equally headline-grabbing. He has proposed radical legislation aimed at reforming Parliament, including a massive cut to MPs’ salaries—slashing the current estimated Shs 30 million monthly earnings down to just Shs 2 million.
Furthermore, he aims to raise the bar for entry into the House, suggesting that MP candidates must possess at least Shs 500 billion in their bank accounts, have a recognisable job or business, and undergo mandatory mental health checks.
Wealth and Speculation
The extensive wealth showcased by Luzzi and his wife, Sarah, across their social media platforms—featuring a vast international business empire—has inevitably sparked intense speculation. Some quarters have labelled him a con artist, while others suggest he is a proxy for established political figures.
Clarifying Identity and Background
In a recent radio interview, Luzzi sought to dispel the rumours and provide clarity on his origins. He introduced himself as the son of Hajj Badru Kafuuma and Hajjat Hadija Nantaba from Luwunga Kakiri, tracing his educational journey through several institutions.
“I went to Kawempe Muslim School, Lubiri SS, and I was among the founders of that school’s mosque,” Luzzi stated. He also revealed he studied alongside popular artist Eddy Kenzo at Lubiri SS, with both of them on a sports scholarship.
His academic path was varied; after studying PCB/Maths, he enrolled in Orthopaedic Medicine at Mulago Paramedics School but “failed to complete because my character did not fit being a doctor.” He subsequently earned a degree in Procurement, Management and Logistics Management from Nkumba University and is currently reading law at Victoria University.
Addressing the confusion surrounding his name, Luzzi revealed he was previously known as Ali Kafuuma Ssenyonga, a name he changed when he became heir to his grandfather. This old identity links him to his close friendship with the late Muhammad Nsereko, the outgoing Kampala Central MP, whom Luzzi previously campaigned for.
Addressing the Source of His Wealth
Luzzi was quick to dismiss claims that his money originates from President Yoweri Museveni or his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Instead, he painted a picture of a vast and diverse business portfolio with interests in the US, Canada, China, Hong Kong, UAE, South Africa, and the UK.
Locally, he confirmed he is a father and that his companies are contracted to work on the UPDF’s NEC farms, supplying tractors and other agricultural equipment. His other ventures include logistics and transport, mining, tours and travel, and Forex.
As the campaign season intensifies, Abraham Luzzi remains a polarizing figure, challenging the status quo of Ugandan politics with a blend of audacious policy, personal wealth, and confrontational rhetoric.
