Zimbabwean Activist Namatai Kwekweza Awarded Prestigious German Africa Prize 2025

BERLIN – In a powerful recognition of her fearless advocacy, 26-year-old Zimbabwean activist Namatai Kwekweza has been named the recipient of the German Africa Prize 2025 for her unwavering commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
Kwekweza’s remarkable journey began at the age of 18 when she founded the WELEAD Trust, an organization dedicated to training and empowering a new generation of young leaders in Zimbabwe. The trust focuses on equipping youth with the skills to engage effectively in their nation’s political processes and decision-making.
Her work, however, has come at a significant personal cost. Kwekweza has faced repeated arrests, intimidation, and even torture from authorities for her outspoken activism. Despite these grave risks, she has remained a resolute and vocal critic of power, continuing to champion democratic principles and human rights.
In her announcement, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner lauded Kwekweza as a “trailblazer for democratic renewal,” emphasizing her role as a crucial voice for marginalized groups. “Namatai Kwekweza represents the courageous spirit of a new generation in Africa,” Klöckner stated. “She is not only a symbol of hope for Zimbabwe but also a powerful advocate for women and youth who are striving for a more just and democratic future.”
The German Africa Prize is awarded by the German Africa Foundation, a nonpartisan organization that aims to foster a more nuanced understanding of Africa within German politics and among the public. The prize honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to democracy, peace, human rights, and sustainable development on the African continent.
Kwekweza’s award underscores the critical importance of youth participation in governance and highlights the ongoing struggle for democratic freedoms in Zimbabwe, serving as an inspiration to activists around the world.
