

KAMPALA, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni have officially opened the inaugural Regional Ministerial Conference on the East African Common Higher Education Area. The landmark summit, held from September 9-11, 2025, at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, marks a significant step towards deeper regional integration.
The conference brings together over 400 key stakeholders, including government ministers, university leaders, students, and private investors. The primary focus is on creating a unified higher education system across East Africa by harmonizing university curricula, establishing mutual recognition of academic qualifications, and boosting student and faculty mobility.
Additional core objectives include enhancing quality assurance mechanisms and strengthening collaborative research initiatives to drive sustainable development in the region. The event is a direct move to operationalize a 2017 East African Community (EAC) declaration and Article 102 of the EAC Treaty.
Former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete attended as a keynote speaker, emphasizing the critical role of digital innovation in transforming the regional educational landscape.
