Uganda Airlines grounds both long haul aircraft as crisis deepens
Uganda Airlines has grounded its entire long-haul fleet, plunging the national carrier into its most serious operational crisis since its relaunch.
The airline confirmed on Friday that both of its Airbus A330-800neo aircraft—which operate routes to London, Dubai, Mumbai, and Lagos—have been taken out of service for “unscheduled maintenance,” effectively halting all intercontinental flights.
Technical paralysis hits network
The grounding follows weeks of operational turbulence that has already seen a complete overhaul of the airline’s top management. Industry insiders warn that the carrier’s small fleet leaves no margin for error, with the sidelining of both long-haul jets causing the entire international network to collapse into cancellations and delays.
According to a statement from the airline, one of the wide-body aircraft became stranded in Lagos, Nigeria, awaiting specific components that are not standard stock items for manufacturers.
“Two of our long-haul aircraft are temporarily out of service due to unscheduled maintenance,” the statement read. “We understand that this may cause concern and inconvenience, and we want to assure all affected passengers that their safety and comfort remain our highest priority.”
Global shortage compounds problems
The crisis has been exacerbated by a crippling global shortage of aircraft spare parts, which has left the airline unable to source the necessary components quickly. Technical teams are reportedly working around the clock to secure the required parts and expertise to return the aircraft to service.
Passenger assistance and rebooking
Uganda Airlines confirmed that affected passengers are being rebooked onto partner airlines where possible to minimise disruption. In some cases, flights may be consolidated or delayed to maintain operational capacity.
The airline is also offering flexibility to customers who prefer to adjust their travel plans, allowing rebooking to future dates without incurring change fees. Impacted passengers are being contacted directly via phone and email with updated flight details.
Passengers booked on London and Mumbai services have been advised to regularly check their flight status on the airline’s official website.
The airline has pledged to provide further updates regarding fleet status and the full restoration of its schedule as soon as more information becomes available.
