UK Delegation Strengthens Tourism Ties with Uganda in High-Level Jinja Meeting

Jinja, Uganda – A high-level United Kingdom delegation has pledged to champion Uganda as a premier tourism destination following productive talks with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) at the Source of the Nile.

The delegation, led by Laurence Robertson, CEO of the Westminster Africa Business Association (WABA), met with UTB CEO Juliana Kagwa and former Board chairperson Hon. Daudi Migereko on February 16, 2026, for an evening of dialogue focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in tourism, trade, and investment.
The discussions, held against the backdrop of the iconic River Nile, centered on sustainable tourism development, adventure product expansion, infrastructure investment, and community-led growth initiatives. The UK team is in Uganda at the invitation of Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja, on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni.
Robertson described the engagement as “exceptionally productive,” expressing enthusiasm for the opportunities witnessed during the visit.
“I will actively share the remarkable attractions and world-class adventures Uganda has to offer with UK investors, tour operators, businesses, and leisure travellers upon my return,” he said.
The visit comes at a time of significant momentum for Uganda’s tourism sector. In 2024, the country recorded approximately 1.37 million international arrivals—a 7.7 per cent increase from the previous year. International tourism receipts reached a record US$1.28 billion, marking a 25.9 per cent rise and contributing an estimated 16 per cent of Uganda’s total exports. The sector directly contributed UGX 6.06 trillion to GDP and supported 803,000 jobs.
Juliana Kagwa underscored the strategic importance of the UK engagement, stating: “This high-level engagement reflects growing international confidence in Uganda’s unique tourism offering. By showcasing authentic experiences, we are forging lasting partnerships that promote responsible tourism, drive inclusive economic growth, and reinforce Uganda’s position as a regional leader in adventure and nature-based travel.”
The meeting aligns with UTB’s broader strategy to target premium markets like the United Kingdom, advance responsible tourism practices, and attract investment that protects natural and cultural heritage while delivering socio-economic benefits.
Officials anticipate that the positive momentum generated by the visit will further strengthen UK-Uganda ties in tourism and related sectors. The Uganda Tourism Board has reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating such impactful initiatives to sustain sector growth and expand the country’s global footprint as the “Pearl of Africa.”
