Ugandan Nationals Safely Return Home After Decade-Long Distress in India

KAMPALA — Four Ugandan nationals, two women and two children, have been safely repatriated to Uganda after enduring over a decade of hardship in India. Their return was facilitated by the State House Diaspora Unit in collaboration with the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi.
The group, comprising Ms. Fiona Namuddu, Ms. Rebecca Nakasaga, and two children aged eight and four, arrived on the evening of Wednesday, January 28, 2026. They were received at Entebbe International Airport by Mr. Henry Wabyona, Deputy Head of the State House Diaspora Unit, and Mr. Topher Matsiko, a Liaison Officer.
The successful return was made possible through an Amnesty Scheme announced by the Government of India, which allows foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas to exit the country without financial penalties using an Expedited Exit Permit (EEP). The scheme is active from September 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026.
The State House Diaspora Unit, working closely with the Uganda High Commission in India, secured the necessary travel documents and facilitated air tickets to ensure their journey home.
“This is a humanitarian intervention aimed at restoring dignity, reuniting families, and giving our fellow citizens a fresh start in life,” stated Mr. Wabyona. He highlighted the plight of the two children, born in India, who have been deprived of formal education due to their circumstances. “Government will work with relevant institutions and partners to explore appropriate support mechanisms for their reintegration,” he added.
The operation underscores the Ugandan government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad and reflects the strong bilateral cooperation with India in managing migration and consular issues.
The State House Diaspora Unit reiterates its mandate to ensure the safety, visibility, and empowerment of Ugandans living overseas. Ugandans in distress abroad are encouraged to contact their nearest diplomatic mission or the Diaspora Unit directly for support.
Mr. Wabyona extended gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Uganda High Commission in India, and all partners who contributed to the successful repatriation.
