Kadondi Gracious Wins Makerere University Guild Presidency in Landslide Online Vote
KAMPALA, Uganda – Kadondi Gracious, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, has been elected as Makerere University’s 92nd Guild President following a tightly contested online election.
Gracious secured 6,801 votes, defeating independent candidate Hannah Karema Tumukunde, who garnered 5,787 votes. A former vice president from Mulimira zone, Gracious ran on a firm “No Cuddles” platform, promising decisive action against tuition hikes and what she termed unfair policies affecting students.
Her campaign received high-profile endorsements from NUP leader Bobi Wine and opposition figure Joel Ssenyonyi, boosting her visibility in a crowded field of 13 candidates.
The intense race underscored Makerere’s enduring status as a political hotspot in Uganda, where student leadership elections often reflect broader national political dynamics. With her victory, students now look to Gracious to deliver on pledges addressing fee structures, student welfare, and university governance.
In a post on X, Bobi Wine celebrated the outcome: “Congratulations, Madam President! Congratulations, Gallant Makererians! The struggle continues!”
