32 Bodies, Mostly Children, Exhumed from Mass Grave in Kericho as Kenya Police Launch Investigation
KERICHO, Kenya — An investigation is underway in Kenya’s Kericho County after 32 bodies—including at least 25 children—were exhumed from a mass grave, authorities said. The discovery, initially thought to involve 14 bodies, expanded rapidly as forensic teams uncovered more remains on the site.
Government pathologist Dr. Richard Njoroge, who is leading the post-mortem examinations, told reporters that the bodies were found “stacked in gunny bags.” The recovered remains include seven adults and 25 children, along with several dismembered body parts.
According to Dr. Njoroge, preliminary observations suggest that some of the bodies may have originated from hospitals and mortuaries, though he stressed that autopsies would be required to confirm their exact source and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The site where the bodies were discovered is owned by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). The organization has denied any involvement in the burials, stating it had no knowledge that the property was being used as a burial ground.
Police officials said two suspects have so far been arrested, and several other individuals are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of those detained or the nature of their alleged connection to the burials.
The exhumation and investigation continue as forensic teams work to identify the victims and determine why the remains were buried at the site.
