Minister Ogwang Confirms Progress on AFCON 2027 Preparations, Says Contractor Addressing CAF Concerns

The Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has moved to reassure the public on the progress of preparations for the AFCON 2027 tournament, confirming that concerns raised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the country’s sports facilities are being addressed.
In a statement released today, Hon. Ogwang confirmed that the Ministry requested CAF to conduct an assessment of the state of the Mandela and Hoima Stadiums as part of quality control and assurance measures ahead of the continental showpiece.
According to the Minister, CAF’s subsequent inspection report identified a few gaps, specifically concerning Hoima Stadium. He noted that these issues have since been formally communicated to the contractor, SUMMA.
“Indeed, the contractor has since held several meetings with us and has hands on deck to ensure that the issues raised are addressed in due course to the satisfaction of the CAF requirements and standards before the next inspection in August this year,” Hon. Ogwang stated.
Addressing concerns beyond the sports facilities, the Minister clarified that other infrastructural gaps—including upgrades to airports, roads, and hotels—fall outside the direct ambit of the Education and Sports sector.
He revealed that the Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Museveni, who serves as the Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for AFCON, submitted a cabinet paper on the matter. Following that submission, the government agreed to provide additional resources to tackle these challenges.
Hon. Ogwang concluded by reaffirming the government’s dedication to the joint bid.
“I want to reassure the public that the government of Uganda, together with Kenya and Tanzania under the ‘East Africa Pamoja’ bid, is fully committed to ensuring that the AFCON 2027 campaign is a success,” he said.
