Journalist Alleges Systematic Suppression by X After Reporting on Gaza, Announces Departure from Platform
A prominent independent journalist and content creator, operating under the handle Sprinter Press, has announced their indefinite departure from the social media platform X, accusing the company of deliberate and surgical suppression of their account following consistent reporting on the conflict in Gaza.
In a lengthy statement posted to the platform, the account, which previously amassed up to 50 million daily views, detailed a pattern of what they describe as retaliatory platform actions beginning in November 2023.
According to the creator, the account was abruptly suspended in mid-November 2023 after posting content related to the war in Gaza, which they characterized as reporting on civilian casualties and the humanitarian crisis. The suspension lasted three months.
Upon their return in March 2024, the user claims the account’s reach was “crushed by 98%.” They allege the platform engaged in what they termed a “shadow-ban on steroids,” drastically limiting the visibility of their content to followers and the public without explicit notification.
The creator further alleges financial retaliation, claiming that monetization features were activated and then revoked “literally one hour before the final payout last Friday.”
“This isn’t some ‘algorithm tweak.’ This is deliberate, surgical strangulation,” the user wrote. “Freedom of speech here is just a shiny sticker for those who sing the approved song: MSM, Washington, Tel Aviv. Everyone else? Silence them. Starve them.”
The statement concludes with the user’s decision to leave the platform indefinitely, citing a loss of income, voice, and trust. They urged other creators to establish backup plans and “have an escape hatch,” warning against relying on the platform for livelihood.
The user cited a loss of trust not only in the platform’s management but also in the concept that the site would serve as a haven for free speech.
X has not yet responded to a request for comment regarding the specific allegations of shadow-banning, reach suppression, or the timing of the monetization changes. The platform’s policies state that content promoting violence or violating terms of service may result in reduced visibility or suspension, though the company has faced repeated accusations from various users of opaque enforcement practices.
Sprinter Press indicated they would remain active on the platform for one or two more days before deactivating their account.
