Ugandan Journalist Abducted After Criticising Computer Misuse Act, Colleagues Demand Release
KAMPALA, Uganda – The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has condemned the abduction of journalist Mukose Arnold Anthony, who was forcibly taken by unidentified plain-clothed men on Sunday afternoon.
According to a UJA statement, Mukose was seized around 1:00 pm just outside the main gate of Metro FM 90.8 along Martin Road in Old Kampala. Eyewitnesses say he was bundled into a grey Toyota Noah that sped off. He had just finished a live broadcast dissecting the Constitutional Court’s recent decision to nullify the Computer Misuse Act.
Mukose, who works for DigiTalk Media, was one of the petitioners in the case that led to the law being struck down, according to activist Dr. Stella Nyanzi.
The UJA described the abduction as a direct attack on press freedom and freedom of expression. “We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mukose Arnold Anthony,” the statement read. The association also called on security agencies to urgently clarify the circumstances, noting that eyewitnesses report the abductors identified themselves as security officers.
Dr. Nyanzi, a vocal critic of the government, expressed shock on social media, writing: “I condemn the abduction of journalists in Uganda. Journalism is not a crime!”
