Speaker Pays Tribute to Mzee Nathan Okori, Celebrates His Legacy as Father of Late Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah

Kampala, Uganda – The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda has expressed profound gratitude to all who gathered to honor and celebrate the life of Mzee Nathan Okori, who passed away at the age of 97.

In a heartfelt statement, the Speaker described Mzee Okori as a remarkable individual who raised his children with strong principles and placed great emphasis on education. The Speaker noted that while much could be said about Mzee Nathan, his legacy as a parent is most eloquently attested to by the achievements of his son, the late Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah.

“I am profoundly grateful to Mzee for bestowing upon us such a distinguished leader—a brilliant lawyer, legislator, and one of the most outstanding leaders our nation has ever known,” the Speaker said. “This stands as a testament to his character and his dedication as a father.”
The Speaker reflected on a personal connection to Mzee Okori, forged through the late Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah, who was described as a brother, leader, and mentor. The Speaker’s impression of Mzee Okori was shaped by the stories shared by his son and by the occasions on which they met.
Recalling the period following the passing of Jacob Oulanyah, the Speaker noted that together with many of his friends and loved ones, a pledge was made to support the family—his father, his children, and all who cared for him.
“I am thankful that we upheld this promise, doing everything within our power to ensure Mzee’s comfort and dignity, and that he was afforded a respectful farewell,” the Speaker stated.
Deepest condolences were extended to Mzee Okori’s children, grandchildren, and all his loved ones. The Speaker assured the family of enduring support, “as long as divine providence allows.”
In a concluding appeal to the Okori family, the Speaker urged Andrew Ojok, all his siblings, and the extended family to preserve the legacy of the two distinguished men who preceded them and to uphold their names through their words and actions.
