Kampala, Uganda — A heavy police and military presence has been witnessed in downtown Kampala following a protest staged by traders operating from Zainabu-Aziiza Emporium and Hardware City buildings in Nakasero over increased taxes.
The demonstration, which erupted early Tuesday morning, saw scores of traders expressing frustration at what they termed as unfair and prohibitive tax policies. Chanting slogans and waving placards, the business owners decried the financial burden imposed by the recent hikes, which they claim are crippling their operations.
“This is not taxation—it’s extortion,” said one trader, who preferred anonymity. “We are struggling to stay afloat, yet the government keeps increasing taxes without considering our realities.”
Security forces swiftly moved in to quell the protest, with both Uganda Police and military personnel deployed to maintain order and prevent further escalation. By mid-morning, the situation remained tense but under control, with traders continuing to voice their grievances amid the deployment.
The government has yet to issue an official statement on the protest or the concerns raised by the traders. However, the incident underscores growing unrest within the business community over the country’s current tax regime.
