KAMPALA – In a move political observers are calling a significant step down, former Kawempe North MP aspirant Luwemba Luswa has been nominated to contest for the position of Kawempe North LC5 Councillor as an independent candidate.
Luswa, a former political aide to the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, explained his decision, stating that he chose to run for the councilor seat to “better serve his people” at the grassroots level.
This new chapter marks a stark contrast to his previous political ambitions. Luswa’s career, however, is widely seen as being hampered by a critical miscalculation.
According to information obtained by this publication, Luswa made what is described as a “worst political mistake” during the previous Kawempe North by-elections. It is reported that he defied direct advice from the National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi.
Kyagulanyi had allegedly counseled him not to contest as an independent candidate, with an assurance that he would be considered for the party ticket in future elections. Luswa reportedly ignored this advice and ran independently, a decision that sources say he “is up to now regretting.”
This defiance is believed to have severely damaged his standing within the powerful opposition party and is cited as a key factor that “partly ruined his political career,” forcing his recalibration to a local council race.
His attempt to re-enter the political fray through the LC5 position is being watched closely as a test of whether a candidate can rebuild a career after a major fallout with party leadership.
