Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings Passes Away at 77
ACCRA, Ghana – Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the former First Lady of Ghana and a formidable political figure in her own right, has died. She was 77.
Her passing was reported by local media to have occurred on Thursday, October 23, in the capital city of Accra.
Nana Konadu was the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana’s first leader under the Fourth Republic, who founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and died in November 2020. She served as First Lady for two decades, from 1981 to 2001, a period that spanned the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era and the beginning of the Fourth Republic.
Beyond her ceremonial role, Nana Konadu carved a distinct and historic path in Ghanaian politics. In 2016, she broke away from her husband’s NDC party to form the National Democratic Party (NDP).
In a groundbreaking move, she became the first former First Lady in Ghana’s history to run for the presidency, challenging the political establishment and cementing her legacy as a trailblazer.
Her death marks the passing of a significant and influential figure who remained at the forefront of public life for over four decades, both alongside her husband and as an independent political force.
Details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
