PM Nabbanja Directs Ham Kiggundu to Open Drainage Channels to Curb Flooding

KAMPALA – In a move to mitigate persistent flooding in the area, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has issued a directive to businessman Hamis Kiggundu, ordering the immediate opening of blocked drainage channels to allow water to flow freely into the Nakivubo Channel.
The directive was delivered on-site as the Prime Minister assessed the flood-prone zones. Her intervention aims to resolve the recurring problem of stormwater inundating nearby communities and infrastructure.
While emphasizing the urgency of the drainage work, the Prime Minister also gave a green light for the ongoing construction projects on the site to continue concurrently. This approval allows Mr. Kiggundu’s developments to proceed without full stoppage, provided the critical flood prevention measures are implemented without delay.
The Nakivubo Channel, a major waterway draining much of Kampala’s stormwater, has been a focal point in the city’s battle against floods. Blockages along its tributaries and feeder channels often lead to water backing up into residential and commercial areas during heavy rains.
This directive from the highest level of government underscores the urgency of addressing the city’s drainage infrastructure to protect lives and property.
