UPDF Quells Rebel Attacks, Kills 41 and Captures 90 in Western Uganda

KAMPALA – The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have announced a decisive victory over armed assailants, confirming the killing of 41 fighters and the capture of over 90 others following a series of coordinated attacks in western Uganda.

The military reports that the armed groups launched simultaneous assaults on multiple police and military installations across the districts of Bundibugyo, Kasese, and Fort Portal City. According to intelligence sources, the primary objective of the attacks was to loot arms and ammunition to bolster rebel activities aimed at toppling the government of President Yoweri Museveni.
The assailants, armed with submachine guns and machetes, targeted key locations including the Kasese Police Barracks, Rugendabara Police Station, and UPDF positions at Malindi and Kakuka in Bundibugyo. An educational institution, Canon Apollo Core Teachers College in Fort Portal City, was also caught in the wave of violence.
The UPDF responded with overwhelming force, successfully repelling the attacks and neutralizing the threat. A statement from the defence forces highlighted the futility of the attempt, suggesting that those captured “are to regret why they picked arms to fight a military government that has been in power for over 40 years now.”
This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by the long-standing government of President Museveni. The swift and forceful response signals the military’s intent to ruthlessly suppress any armed attempts to destabilize the regime. Operations in the affected regions are likely to continue as security forces work to restore full order.
