Bobi Wine Bodyguard Flees Uganda Amid Allegations of Destroying Security Equipment

KAMPALA – Godfrey Onzima, a prominent bodyguard for National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, has reportedly fled into exile, according to multiple sources.
The development follows alleged intense pursuit by military and Internal Security Organisation (ISO) operatives. Onzima, commonly referred to by his alias “Tower,” is wanted on accusations of aggravated robbery and insulting security officers.
Reports indicate that Onzima’s escape was narrowly executed through Kenya. This comes after he allegedly evaded arrest during a recent security operation. The operation, said to be commanded by a police commando identified as Mukiibi, reportedly raided a hotel where Bobi Wine and his campaign team were lodging overnight.
The chain of events leading to Onzima’s flight appears to stem from a specific incident involving a security vehicle. Preliminary investigations, as reported by sources, suggest that a covert security team led by an operative named Isabirye was compromised. It is alleged that NUP supporters distracted the team, allowing one individual access to a security vehicle containing internet jamming equipment.
According to these accounts, Onzima then commanded a raid on the double cabin pickup truck. He is said to have personally seized a laptop and other machines alleged to have been used to intercept Bobi Wine’s internet connection during his campaign activities. Onzima reportedly disconnected and destroyed the equipment, throwing the devices into a water channel connected to the River Nile.
The alleged destruction of government property prompted a response from authorities. Police spokesman Kitumwa Rusoke previously assured the public that anyone involved in damaging security equipment would be apprehended.
Fearing severe consequences, including torture and potential death if captured, Onzima sought a way out of the country. It is believed that Bobi Wine’s contacts within the government assisted Onzima in his clandestine exit from Uganda to ensure his safety.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the opposition and state security agencies as the country moves closer to the January 2026 general elections.
