President Xi and President Trump Hold Constructive Phone Call, Pledge Deeper China–U.S. Cooperation

In a significant diplomatic development, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald J. Trump held a telephone conversation that both sides described as positive, forward-looking, and strategically important. The call builds on the momentum generated at their recent meeting in Busan, marking another step toward stabilizing and strengthening China–U.S. relations.
During the conversation, President Xi emphasized that the bilateral relationship has maintained a “steady and positive trajectory” since the Busan talks — a trend welcomed by both nations and the international community. He reaffirmed that cooperation between China and the United States consistently benefits both sides, while confrontation has repeatedly proven damaging. Xi expressed confidence that the vision of both countries helping each other prosper is a “tangible prospect within reach.”
President Xi urged both sides to sustain the current momentum by deepening dialogue, expanding areas of cooperation, and reducing sources of friction. He called for advancing relations on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, with the goal of generating new opportunities and delivering greater benefits not only to the people of both countries but also to the wider world.
On regional issues, Xi reiterated China’s principled stance on the Taiwan question, stressing that Taiwan’s return to China is embedded in the post–World War II international order. Recalling the historical ties between China and the United States during WWII — when both nations fought together against fascism and militarism — Xi underlined the importance of jointly safeguarding the hard-won peace and international order established after the war.
President Trump echoed the positive tone in an official statement following the call. He described the conversation as “very good,” noting that the two leaders discussed a wide range of topics, including Ukraine, Russia, fentanyl, soybeans, and other agricultural products. Trump highlighted progress on agreements affecting American farmers, calling the results “very important” and promising further improvements.
Trump praised the strength of U.S.–China relations, noting that the phone call served as a follow-up to their “highly successful” meeting in South Korea three weeks earlier. He stated that both sides had made “significant progress” in keeping their agreements up-to-date and accurate — progress that now allows both countries to “set our sights on the big picture.”
In a notable diplomatic exchange, President Xi invited President Trump to visit Beijing in April, an invitation Trump accepted. Trump also extended an invitation for Xi to make a State Visit to the United States later in the year. Both leaders agreed on the importance of frequent communication and pledged to maintain close contact going forward.
The call signals renewed efforts by Beijing and Washington to stabilize relations, manage disputes responsibly, and expand cooperation on key global issues. Diplomats and analysts view the exchange as a promising step toward greater predictability and improved ties between the two major powers.
