President Museveni Commissions Hoima Stadium, Issues Warning Against Vandalism

HOIMA CITY – President Yoweri Museveni has officially commissioned the newly constructed 20,000-seater Hoima City Stadium, a project valued at Shs 129 million, while issuing a stern warning against its vandalism.
The President described the stadium as a critical investment in national infrastructure and sports development, largely driven by Uganda’s commitment to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“This Africa Cup of Nations that Uganda will host in 2027 stimulated us to do something here in Hoima City,” President Museveni said during the launch on Wednesday. He emphasized a renewed government focus on sports development after years of prioritizing sectors like security, agriculture, and manufacturing.
The Head of State advised the local community to protect the facility. “President Museveni advised the people of Hoima to keep this sports facility in good shape,” a statement from the event read.
The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, hailed the timely completion of the stadium, constructed by the Turkish firm Summa in a record four months. She framed it as a national Christmas gift and a testament to collective effort.
“This is the day as a country we celebrate this new stadium as a Christmas gift,” she said. “The stadium is a testimony to what can be accomplished when the country works together.”
She also commended State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, for his dedication to the project.
The commissioning was part of broader developments in the oil-rich region. “It has been a combination of events to take on this job including the oil industry development and Hoima airport,” the President noted.
Following his speech, President Museveni, accompanied by the First Lady, performed the ceremonial kick-off to flag a match between Bunyoro Kitara FC and KCCA. In a light-hearted moment, he showcased a few football skills and boxing gestures before departing.
The high-profile event was attended by Vice President Robinah Nabbajja, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, Ministers Kasaija and Balaamu, Moses Rwakitarate, Kakumiro RDC Francis Kibuuka, and other dignitaries.
The multi-purpose sports facility boasts a swimming arena, a media workstation, food courts, a presidential suite, parking, and other modern amenities.
The stadium’s completion marks a significant milestone as Uganda prepares to host AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
