Russia and Belarus Condemn US “Aggression” in Venezuela, Call for Maduro’s Restoration
In a show of solidarity, the foreign ministers of Russia and Belarus have jointly condemned United States actions in Venezuela and called for the return of deposed President Nicolas Maduro to power.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Belarusian counterpart, Maxim Ryzhenkov, discussed the situation in a phone call on January 3rd. According to a readout of their conversation, the two allies presented a united front, “resolutely condemning the aggression carried out by the United States against a sovereign state, in violation of international law.”
The ministers issued a strong demand for the “immediate release” of what they termed the “legitimate President of Venezuela,” Nicolas Maduro, and his wife. They insisted on their return to the capital, Caracas, and “the restoration of Nicolas Maduro as head of state.”
Furthermore, Lavrov and Ryzhenkov emphasized the importance of establishing conditions for a diplomatic resolution. They stressed that any dialogue to resolve the ongoing political crisis must be conducted “in accordance with international law.”
The call underscores the continued geopolitical support for Maduro from Moscow and Minsk, positioning them in direct opposition to the US and other Western nations that have recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó. Russia has historically been a key political, economic, and military ally of the Maduro government.
