Last Surviving Mau Mau General Passes Away at 106
The last surviving General of the 12 senior leaders who commanded the Mau Mau rebellion against British colonial rule in Kenya, Kiambati wa Njora, has died at the age of 106.
His son, Maina Kiambati, confirmed that his father died of old age on Tuesday at the family home in Ngorika, Ol Kalou, located in Kenya’s Nyandarua County.
The death of Kiambati wa Njora marks the end of an era, as he was the final one of the twelve top-ranking Mau Mau veterans of “General rank” from the Nyandarua region.
According to local media, the late general spent his final weekend surrounded by children and grandchildren at home, where he also held a memorial service for a grandson who passed away a decade ago. His body has been transferred to a funeral home in Nakuru town as the family begins burial preparations.
The Mau Mau Rebellion, a pivotal armed uprising against British rule in Kenya from 1952 to 1960, was primarily spearheaded by the Kikuyu-dominated Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA). Although militarily suppressed by British forces, the rebellion played a crucial role in accelerating Kenya’s journey to independence, which was achieved in 1963.
