FIFA Extends Global Bans to Ugandan Trio in Match-Fixing Scandal
Zurich, Switzerland – March 31, 2026 – The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed worldwide football bans on three individuals from Uganda following their involvement in a match-fixing scheme during a 2024 league encounter.
Former Express FC coach Mike Mutyaba, goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa, and ex-chief executive officer Miiro Ashraf Mwanje have been suspended from all football-related activities globally. The bans took effect on March 12, 2026.
The sanctions stem from a 2024 Uganda Premier League match between Express FC and Kitara FC, which was investigated by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) before being escalated to world football’s governing body.
In addition to the trio, FIFA has confirmed the extension of global suspensions for several other Ugandan football figures who were originally sanctioned by the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee in 2024. These individuals have been handed bans ranging from five to ten years:
· Saleh Maganda (formerly Calvary FC) – 5-year ban
· Franco Oringa (formerly Northern Gateway) – 5-year ban
· Godfrey Lwesibawa (formerly Gadaffi FC) – 5-year ban
· Yahaya Mahad Kakooza (formerly Gadaffi FC) – 5-year ban
· Andrew Waiswa (formerly Gadaffi FC) – 5-year ban
· George Nkurunziza (referee) – 10-year ban
· Deogracious Opio (referee) – 10-year ban
FIFA has communicated the decisions to all relevant parties.
Meanwhile, the case of Mpazira Ashiraf remains pending before the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, with a decision expected in the coming months.
The global body reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the sport, urging participants to “Recognise, Reject & Report” any instances of corruption.
