PAC-Central Urges Entebbe Hospital to Boost Mental Health Services to Ease Pressure on Butabika

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC-Central) has called on Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital to strengthen its mental health services in a bid to decongest Butabika National Referral Hospital.
The committee’s deputy chairperson, Hon. Gorreth Namugga, revealed that Parliament had received concerns from Butabika regarding growing congestion at the facility, driven by a steady increase in mental health admissions.

She noted that the overwhelming burden on the national referral hospital stems from a lack of adequate capacity at lower health centres and district hospitals to manage mental health cases.
“The burden has largely fallen on the national referral facility because lower health centres and district hospitals lack adequate capacity to manage such cases,” Namugga said.
She made the remarks while chairing a committee meeting with officials from Entebbe Hospital, led by its Executive Director, Dr John Bosco Nsubuga.
The committee urged the Entebbe hospital management to invest in expanding mental health services to ensure patients receive care at the regional level, reducing the need for referrals to Butabika.
