Ghana Awards Damang Gold Mine to Local Firm After Rejecting Gold Fields’ Lease Renewal
ACCRA, Ghana – Ghana has selected local company Engineers & Planners Ltd. to take over operations at the Damang gold mine, previously owned and managed by South Africa’s Gold Fields, as part of a broader push to expand local participation in the mining sector.
The move follows Ghana’s decision last year to reject Gold Fields’ application for lease renewal. Engineers & Planners emerged as the winning bidder after demonstrating access to $505 million in financing and meeting stringent technical, safety, and local-content requirements, according to government officials.
Officials say the transition is designed to keep the mine in active operation, protect existing jobs, and advance greater Ghanaian ownership within the country’s gold mining industry.
Neither Gold Fields nor Engineers & Planners has issued an immediate public statement regarding the handover timeline. The government has assured stakeholders that the change in ownership will be managed to minimize disruption to production and employment at the Damang site.
The decision marks a significant step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to reshape its mining sector, prioritizing domestic firms in the extraction of the nation’s mineral resources.
