Uganda’s Hoima City Stadium Fully Completed, Delivering a Major Win for AFCON 2027

HOIMA, Uganda – In a significant milestone for East African sports, Uganda’s state-of-the-art Hoima City Stadium has been declared 100% complete, well ahead of its scheduled handover and under budget. The project’s successful delivery marks a key achievement for the nation as it prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The $129 million sports complex, located in the western oil-rich district of Hoima, was constructed by Turkish contractor SUMMA International. The facility boasts a 20,000-seat main stadium and a complementary 2,000-seat indoor arena. Despite global supply chain challenges, the contractor delivered the project on schedule for its planned handover in December 2025.
Government officials have celebrated the timely completion. The State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, confirmed the milestone after leading a series of inspections, hailing the stadium as a cornerstone facility for Uganda’s role in the upcoming continental tournament, which it will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
“The successful and budget-conscious completion of Hoima City Stadium stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering on our promises for AFCON 2027,” Minister Ogwang stated. “This world-class venue will not only host international football but will also serve as a catalyst for sports development in the region.”
The project’s efficient progress stands in stark contrast to delays that have plagued other major sports infrastructure projects within Uganda, making its timely finish a notable success for the government.
However, the news has been met with a mix of national pride and public concern. While many Ugandans celebrate the new asset, questions have been raised about the long-term maintenance plan for the facility and its relatively remote location, which some fear could hinder accessibility for fans and its post-tournament viability.
With the stadium now complete, the focus for the Ugandan government will shift to finalizing other necessary infrastructure and addressing these public concerns to ensure a successful and lasting legacy from the AFCON 2027 tournament.
