Uganda Airlines has officially announced a vacancy for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), initiating a critical search for leadership to steer the national carrier’s strategic direction and operational growth.
The advertisement, released by the airline’s Board of Directors, outlines stringent qualifications and a comprehensive scope of duties for the role. The board emphasizes the need for a leader with deep aviation expertise and proven strategic capabilities.
Strict Qualifications Set
Prospective applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in fields such as business administration, aviation management, engineering, finance, or law, with a master’s degree mandatory. Additional aviation-specific training will be considered an advantage.
The airline requires over ten years of senior management experience within the aviation industry and a demonstrable track record of effective collaboration with a corporate board in a regulated environment. Essential knowledge spans airline economics, network planning, aviation law, safety management systems, and financial management.
Candidates are also expected to exhibit high ethical standards, integrity, sound judgement, and a commitment to public accountability, alongside experience managing a large workforce.
Broad Scope of Leadership Duties
The successful candidate will serve as the accountable manager for the Air Operator Certificate and Approved Maintenance Organisation. Reporting directly to the board, the CEO will oversee daily operations aligned with the airline’s strategy and budget.
Key responsibilities include shaping and executing corporate strategy, defining the airline’s vision, and leading the senior leadership team. Commercial duties will involve overseeing code-share negotiations, enhancing revenue, and driving business recovery plans.
A core mandate is to champion a robust safety culture and ensure full regulatory compliance across all operations. The role also demands extensive stakeholder engagement with government ministries, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and partner airlines.
