Justice Minister Mao Considers Challenge for Parliament Speaker Amid Political Tensions
A significant political contest is shaping up in Uganda’s legislature as Justice Minister and Democratic Party (DP) President Norbert Mao has expressed interest in running for the position of Speaker of Parliament. This sets the stage for a potential clash with the incumbent, Anita Among, who currently holds the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s official backing.
Mao, who recently secured his parliamentary seat for Gulu City with 7,359 votes, stated that his extensive experience in law and politics qualifies him for the role. He revealed he is currently consulting with NRM leadership, including President Yoweri Museveni, before making a final decision on his candidacy.
The incumbent Speaker, Anita Among, remains the NRM’s endorsed candidate despite being under international scrutiny. Last year, the United States imposed corruption sanctions on Among, citing “significant corruption.” Her continued support within the ruling party highlights a tension between domestic political backing and international accountability pressures.
The potential race has drawn attention to the evolving relationship between the DP and the NRM, formalized through a cooperation agreement led by Mao. His bid is seen by some as a test of this political alliance. Adding to the intrigue, President Museveni’s son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, publicly praised Mao on social media, calling him “the most brilliant opposition leader in Uganda today” and stating he has “Presidential skills.”
The 12th Parliament is scheduled to be sworn in between May 13 and May 15, when the election for Speaker will be held. Mao’s possible entry into the race promises a tense and closely watched vote, with the outcome likely to influence the balance of power and the dynamics of Uganda’s political landscape.
