Ugandan President Museveni Visits Tanzania to Bolster Energy and Trade Partnerships
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has concluded a working visit to Tanzania, focused on reinforcing bilateral ties and advancing key joint infrastructure projects. The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, centered on energy cooperation and trade facilitation.
High on the agenda was the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), a critical project now reported to be nearly 80% complete. The leaders confirmed the pipeline remains on track for its first crude oil exports in July 2026. Discussions also covered plans for natural gas pipelines, extensions to railway networks, and increased use of Tanzanian ports to enhance regional trade routes.
Beyond economic matters, the two heads of state pledged continued cooperation on regional security, particularly addressing stability in the Great Lakes region.
The visit comes amidst ongoing political controversy following Uganda’s disputed January general election. Analysts suggest the trip serves to reaffirm strong neighborly relations and a shared focus on development.
In a post on X, President Museveni stated: “I have arrived in the United Republic of Tanzania on a working visit… We shall hold bilateral talks aimed at strengthening cooperation and deepening the long-standing relations between our two countries.” He has previously emphasized Africa’s need to move towards production and value addition, a theme echoed in the joint infrastructure projects.
