MP Raises Alarm Over Illicit Alcohol Disguised as Energy Drinks on Ugandan Market
Kazo County Member of Parliament, Dan Kimosho, has raised concerns over what he describes as a growing proliferation of illicit alcohol being sold on the Ugandan market under the guise of energy drinks.
Speaking recently, Kimosho warned that these products pose a significant risk to consumers, as they are being marketed deceptively while potentially containing unregulated or harmful ingredients. He called for urgent intervention from multiple government agencies to address the situation.
The legislator demanded that the Ministry of Trade step in by presenting a comprehensive list of products that have been certified by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS). He further emphasized the need for transparency regarding the ingredients used in the manufacturing of these beverages.
“We should subject the drinks to tests at the government analytical laboratory,” Kimosho stated, insisting that scientific verification is necessary to determine the safety and composition of the products in question.
In addition to regulatory oversight on manufacturing and certification, Kimosho also highlighted the role of advertising in misleading the public. He urged the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to tighten controls on how these products are promoted across various media platforms.
His remarks add to ongoing national discussions regarding the enforcement of standards in the food and beverage sector, as authorities continue to grapple with the circulation of substandard and illicit alcohol across the country.
