
Government Directs Local Leaders to Name All Streets by August 2026

The Ministry of Local Government issues deadline for comprehensive street naming across all urban centers
The Honorable Minister of Local Government, Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, has issued a directive to all Local Government leaders across Uganda requiring that all streets and roads within their jurisdictions be officially named by August 30, 2026.
The directive, which applies to Cities, Divisions, Municipalities, Town Councils, and other urban areas, follows guidance received from the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Adviser on Special Operations, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Why Street Naming Matters
According to the Minister’s communication, proper naming of streets and roads will significantly enhance:
· Easy location and navigation
· Emergency response times
· Security operations
· Service delivery efficiency
· Urban planning initiatives
· Investment opportunities
· Other important national operations
Honoring Distinguished Personalities
Local Governments have been instructed to consider honoring distinguished personalities who have made significant contributions to Uganda, Africa, and humanity. The directive specifically mentions:
· Traditional rulers and cultural leaders
· Kings and eminent historical figures
· NRA liberation and resistance heroes
· UPDF heroes and distinguished national servants
· Former Presidents and national leaders
· Outstanding Ugandans in public service
· Notable figures in education, science, business, sports, arts, culture, and community development
Implementation Timeline
The Ministry has established the following deadlines:
· August 30, 2026: All streets and roads must be officially named
· September 5, 2026: Respective street name signs must be installed
All Local Governments are required to submit the approved list of names and Council resolutions to the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government.
Call for Clean Environments
In his closing remarks, Minister Barugahara emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness in Cities, Municipalities, Town Councils, and communities, stating that “A clean environment reflects good leadership, effective service delivery, and respect for our citizens.”
The directive applies to all Local Government leaders including Chairpersons LC V, City Mayors, Division Mayors, Town Council Mayors, and Sub-County Chiefs.
