Ugandans Unite in Record Numbers for 14th Annual Rotary Cancer Run
KAMPALA, UGANDA – In a powerful display of community spirit and commitment to a critical cause, thousands of Ugandans across the nation laced up their running shoes on Sunday, August 31, 2025, for the 14th annual Rotary Cancer Run.
The main event was held at the Kololo Independence Grounds in the capital city of Kampala, with simultaneous runs taking place in towns including Mbarara and Kasana-Luweero, uniting the country in a single mission.
Organized by Rotary Uganda, this year’s run had an ambitious goal: to raise Shs 4 billion (Ugandan Shillings) for the construction and equipping of the Rotary Cancer Centre at Nsambya Hospital. The funds are crucial for acquiring advanced medical technology, such as linear accelerators, which are vital for providing modern radiotherapy and improving cancer treatment outcomes in Uganda.
Participants had the option to join 5km, 10km, or 21km races, making the event accessible to runners and walkers of all fitness levels. The atmosphere was electric, with cheers and support echoing throughout the courses. Emmanuel Katongole emerged as a top performer, leading the pack in the races.
The massive fundraising effort was bolstered by significant corporate support from sponsors including DFCU Bank and the Safal Uganda Baati Foundation. Beyond the financial target, the event served as a major platform to boost public awareness about cancer prevention, treatment, and the importance of early detection.
The run has become a cornerstone event in Uganda’s health advocacy calendar, successfully channeling national energy and solidarity into a tangible fight against cancer, fostering a profound sense of community unity for a healthier future.
