Uganda Seeks UGX17 Billion to Boost Pork and Chicken Production
The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries is seeking an allocation of UGX 17 billion to revitalise government-run livestock breeding centres, with a sharp focus on expanding pork and chicken production in the country.
The request was formally presented by the State Minister for Animal Husbandry, Hon. Bright Rwamirama, during a session with the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture. The minister appeared before the committee to outline the Ministry’s priorities in the 2026/27 National Budget Framework Paper.
The substantial funding is earmarked for the establishment and renovation of specialised breeding and production infrastructure on government farms and ranches.
“The focus will be on piggery and poultry structures, to support rapid breeding and production of high-performing piggery and poultry breeds,” Minister Rwamirama told the Members of Parliament.
He detailed that the ministry’s efforts would involve constructing and upgrading a range of essential facilities. These include livestock breeding units, paddocks, spray races, intensive direct control systems, animal sheds, and valley tanks for water storage.
“The estimate here is about UGX17 Billion,” the minister stated, underscoring the scale of the planned investment.
This initiative is part of a broader strategic move by the government to increase the domestic production of pork and chicken, which are key protein sources for the growing population. By enhancing the capacity of government ranches to breed and distribute high-quality livestock, the ministry aims to support farmers across the country with improved animal stock, ultimately boosting the entire livestock value chain.
The proposal now rests with the parliamentary committee for consideration as part of the broader budget approval process for the forthcoming financial year.
