IGG Launches Probe into Speaker Anita Among as 61,000 Public Officers Fail to Declare Wealth
Kampala, Uganda – The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Justice Aisha Batala Naluzze, has confirmed receipt of a petition seeking a comprehensive investigation into Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among over alleged breaches of the Leadership Code Act.
The petition, filed by a group of lawyers and activists, accuses the Speaker of misconduct and opulence inconsistent with her official position. In response, Justice Naluzze stated that the Inspectorate has already opened inquiries into the matter.
“We have received the petition, and the Inspectorate has launched investigations. Our findings will be shared with the public upon completion,” Naluzze said.
She also urged citizens to continue reporting suspected opulence and misconduct involving public officials and government leaders, reaffirming the Inspectorate’s commitment to enforcing ethical standards.
In a separate revelation, the IGG disclosed that 61,570 public officers failed to declare their income, assets, and liabilities during the April wealth declaration exercise. Out of 302,800 expected officials, only 241,230 complied with the legal requirement.
Justice Naluzze warned that those who failed to declare risk being summoned before the Leadership Code Tribunal, where they could face penalties including demotion, heavy fines, or imprisonment.
“The law is clear. Declaration of assets is a mandatory obligation for all specified public officers. Non-compliance will attract sanctions,” she cautioned.
The twin announcements underscore the Inspectorate’s intensified push for accountability and transparency among Uganda’s public leaders.
