Nigerian, US Forces Kill Over 20 ISWAP Fighters in Coordinated Airstrikes in Borno State
Maiduguri, Nigeria – Nigerian troops operating in conjunction with United States forces have eliminated more than 20 fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in a series of coordinated airstrikes in the Metele area of Borno State, northeast Nigeria.
According to a military statement released on Monday, the strikes were carried out based on credible intelligence regarding the movement and gathering of ISWAP militants in the region. The operation targeted a known insurgent enclave, delivering precision strikes that neutralized the fighters and destroyed their equipment.
The military described the action as part of a broader campaign to dismantle terrorist networks, deny insurgents safe havens, and prevent the regrouping of fighters in Nigeria’s northeast. The region has long been a hotbed for armed groups seeking to establish control and launch attacks on civilian and military targets.
Notably, the latest airstrikes come just three days after Nigerian authorities announced that a separate joint operation with US forces had killed Abu Bilal al-Minuki, a senior commander linked to the Islamic State (ISIS). Al-Minuki’s death is considered a significant blow to the militant leadership structure.
Officials have reiterated their commitment to ongoing cooperation with international partners to curb insurgency and restore lasting peace to the Lake Chad basin area. No civilian casualties or damage to non-military infrastructure have been reported in the latest strikes.
