UCC Suspends ‘Mukube Paver’ Song Over Violence Concerns, Dangerous Social Media Challenges
KAMPALA, Uganda – The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has suspended the song “Mukube Paver” by artist Dynaso Weqoso, citing concerns that the track promotes violence and has triggered dangerous imitation behaviors among young people on social media platforms.
In a public notice issued this week, the communications regulator announced an immediate ban on the broadcast, distribution, and sharing of the song across all media platforms, including television, radio, streaming services, and social media sites.
Dangerous ‘Challenges’ Spark Concern
According to the UCC, the song’s lyrics and accompanying audio-visual content explicitly and implicitly glorify violent and aggressive conduct. The commission reported receiving numerous complaints from the public regarding the track’s influence.
Of particular concern to regulators is the emergence of harmful “challenge” activities on platforms such as TikTok and other social media, where young people are reportedly mimicking and glorifying the violent acts depicted in the song.
Who Is Affected by the Ban
The directive applies to:
· Broadcasters: Must immediately suspend airing the song and any programs, discussions, or content that promote, analyze, or reference it
· Online platforms: Required to remove, disable access to, and prevent further uploads of the song and related user-generated challenge content
· Internet service providers and digital streaming services: Directed to block the song from their platforms
· The public: Sharing, promoting, or distributing prohibited content may result in individual liability
Penalties for Non-Compliance
The UCC has warned that any person who contravenes the directive commits an offense and faces serious penalties upon conviction, including:
· A fine not exceeding 48 currency points
· Imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years
· Both penalties may apply
The commission has cited Sections 5(i)(b), (j), (x), 30, 32, and 46 of the Uganda Communications Act, along with Regulation 41 of the Uganda Communications (Content) Regulations 2019, as the legal basis for its action.
Artist Summoned for Meeting
The UCC has invited Dynaso Weqoso to appear before the commission on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. to discuss the findings and explore corrective measures.
The regulator emphasized that the suspension remains in effect “until further notice” and urged all stakeholders to comply immediately to avoid regulatory and legal sanctions.
Commission Defends Decision
In its statement, the UCC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible content that upholds public morality, safety, and national values.
The commission encouraged all content creators, distributors, and broadcasters to exercise due diligence and responsibility in their work.
This directive takes immediate effect. Members of the public seeking clarification may contact the Uganda Communications Commission directly.
