Robert Kabushenga Announces Bid for FUFA Presidency, Vows to “Save Ugandan Football from Thieves”
KAMPALA, Uganda – Former New vision CEO and veteran corporate leader Robert Kabushenga has thrown his hat into the ring for the presidency of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), declaring it is “time to save our football from thieves.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kabushenga revealed that he first attempted to contest for the FUFA top seat in June 2013, but claims the governing body’s rules were “quickly amended to keep me out.” More than a decade later, he is renewing his ambition.
“I am back to say I am still available for that task,” Kabushenga wrote. “I can bring about the footballing glory all we Ugandans dream of. Let’s take back our game.”
Pressure Mounts on Incumbent Magogo
Kabushenga’s announcement comes as current FUFA President Moses Magogo faces mounting scrutiny. Both Magogo and his wife have been caught up in corruption probes and subsequent international sanctions, though specific details of the latest investigations remain unclear.
Magogo has been at the helm of FUFA since 2013, a tenure that saw Uganda qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2017 and 2019, as well as the construction of a new FUFA headquarters and growth in revenue. However, critics point to stalled progress for the national team in recent years and internal rules that, in their view, limit legitimate challengers to the presidency.
Mixed Reactions from Football Fans
Reactions across Ugandan social media have been split. Supporters of Kabushenga point to his extensive corporate management experience and turnaround reputation as assets that could professionalize FUFA’s operations. Skeptics, however, question his direct football administration background and note that no election is scheduled until 2029, barring any extraordinary changes to the electoral calendar or Magogo’s early departure.
